Literacy Academy has been in existence since 2013. It has been a labor of love to create this website. 

I have been a literacy consultant for over forty years. I have worked with students from kindergarten through college age. One of the most important lessons I have learned, is to find out exactly why a student cannot access curriculum/reading materials. Most of the time, it is because no one figured out that the student could not pronounce the words properly. Most teachers are very busy trying to get students to enjoy reading, but they do not realize that sometimes the student cannot read the words. I have heard teachers say, "The more they read, the better they will understand the content". No, if they cannot read the words, making them try to read more, does not fix the problem.

The Orton-Gillingham methodology focuses on teaching the student how to read the words and at the high school level, how to determine word meaning using prefixes, suffixes and roots . Whether it is decoding one, two, three, or four syllable words, there is a method that works. Once the student can read the words, then you can begin to teach them vocabulary, comprehension, and most of all have them begin to enjoy reading. Then readers workshop will work.

This website contains the materials you will need to help students become happy readers who will enjoy picking up a chapter book or novel and become  immersed in a whole new world.
